Physical Environments for Digital Libraries: Supporting In-Situ Collaborative Work and Large Format Materials Using Interactive Surfaces
نویسنده
چکیده
Digital libraries build on a long history of interdisciplinary research combing the fields of libraries and digital technologies. Ironically, many digital libraries today are still narrowly focused on remote access using traditional desktop environments, and largely unconnected with physical libraries. The Interaction Group Laboratory in the School of Information at The University of Texas at Austin is working on improving the integration of digital and physical libraries. This paper reports on four projects that aim at improving the support for people conducting collaborative work and using digital libraries in-situ within a physical library context. The paper reflects about the overall lessons learned throughout these projects, and outlines a research agenda for tacking the major remaining challenges for integrated libraries.

Using Interactive Search Elements in Digital Libraries
Background and Aim: Interaction in a digital library help users locating and accessing information and also assist them in creating knowledge, better perception, problem solving and recognition of dimension of resources. This paper tries to identify and introduce the components and elements that are used in interaction between user and system in search and retrieval of information in digital li...
متن کاملInformation Visualization on Interactive Tabletops in Work vs. Public Settings
Digital tabletop displays and other large interactive displays have recently become more affordable and commonplace. Due to their benefits for supporting collaborative work—when compared to current desktop-based setups—they will likely be integrated in tomorrow’s work and learning environments. In these environments the exploration of information is a common task. We describe design considerati...
متن کاملBlended Spaces for Collaborative Creativity
In this paper, we reflect on our experiences of designing, developing, implementing and using real world, functional multitouch enabled interactive collaborative environments (ICEs). Combining aspects of immersive collaborative environments with interactive collaborative surfaces, the design, implementation and use of these rooms raises some interesting issues of design. ICEs typically are inte...
متن کاملUsing studies of collaborative activity in physical environments to inform the design of digital libraries
This paper considers how studies of collaborative activities in the real world can be used to aid in the design of digital libraries. We describe two studies of collaboration in physical environments. The first study examines behaviour at the enquiry desk in an academic library. The second study examines collaboration in an office environment concentrating on 'over the shoulder learning'. The n...
متن کاملDesigning for Co-located Social media use in the home using the CASOME infrastructure
. A range of research has pointed to empirical studies of the use of domestic materials as a useful insight when designing future interactive systems for homes. In this paper we describe how we designed a system from the basis of lessons from such studies. Our system applies the CASOME infrastructure (context-aware interactive media platform for social computing in the home) to construct a syst...
